Old vs. new diesel technology

Whether or not we're talking diesel or even gasoline, the issue in European countries is more about old technologies and higher emissions ("More black eyes for the diesel powered engine, " autonews. com, Feb. 10).

Both Paris, france and London are now distinguishing between old and new-technology rather than full bans upon diesel or any other technological innovation.

We rely on the ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY, the California Air Sources Board and other agencies which are in charge of health-based air quality requirements for all vehicle emissions -- not an automotive reporter -- as best-suited to determine whether or not there is a problem or not along with diesel.

Rather than condemning diesel-powered, those agencies recognize the actual improvements in emissions overall performance of new-generation clean diesel engine vehicles and their importance within meeting greenhouse gas emissions targets.

In January, the Effects Institute published the outcomes of a multiyear research study taking a look at emissions performance and wellness effects of new-technology diesel motors; heavy-duty truck engines, actually. Laboratory animals exposed to all those emissions for 30 a few months showed no significant results: no lung cancer, absolutely no tumors.

Co-sponsored by the ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY, CARB and vehicle as well as engine manufacturers, the statement speaks for itself.
