UPM to field test wood-based diesel fuel in urban bus traffic

UPM is to start field assessments of its novel wood-based diesel fuel in metropolitan buses together with Helsinki Area Transport (HSL) and the VTT Technical Research Centre. Area tests are also supported by St1, Volvo and Transdev Finland. The new round of lab tests with UPM BioVerno energy will start in October as well as run for a minimum of one yr.

UPM BioVerno diesel offers previously been studied in a number of engine and vehicle testing conducted by various investigation centers as well as in fleet checks, all with excellent outcomes. The studies have shown which UPM BioVerno works just like the best quality diesel fuels and also reduces tail pipe emissions significantly compared to fossil diesel powered.

The heavy duty vehicle area tests will focus on examining UPM’s renewable diesel when it comes to fuel functionality in tour bus engines, their emissions along with fuel consumption compared to fossil diesel. These tests is going to be operated by Transdev Finland on HSL’s regular coach route between the city of Kerava and Helsinki in Finland. The tests will be completed with four identical Volvo Dinar VI Class buses which have low emissions and effective engines.

“The tests will probably be conducted together with renowned spouses, ” said Sari Mannonen, sales and marketing director at UPM Biofuels. “We are especially thrilled to be able to take part in the Helsinki Region Transport initiative that will aims for emission totally free public transport. One of the main targets of the initiative would be to start using 100 percent renewable biological carbon fuel in their diesel vehicles within the coming years. ”

The actual bus field tests will also be part of a larger “BioPilot” task coordinated by VTT. The purpose of this project is to motivate companies to commercialize power solutions in traffic.

“Advanced, sustainable biofuels are a great chance for Finland-they could be our quick track to low-emission visitors, ” said Nils-Olof Nylund, research professor at VTT. “When considering cutting targeted traffic emissions both from the technical and economical point of view, Finland should invest in domestic biofuel production in the coming many years. VTT has previously examined UPM BioVerno diesel in passenger cars and bus motors with great results. The new car field tests continue our own long-term collaboration in screening with UPM. ”

Each VTT and bus producer Volvo will test all of the buses used in the field assessments before the start, in the middle with the end of the testing time period. In addition to operating the busses, Transdev Finland is responsible for the actual follow up of diesel usage and the kilometers driven. St1 is the distributor of the gas used in this project-UPM BioVerno has already been sold by St1 filling stations in Finland as part of their Diesel In addition fuel since the spring.

UPM’s renewable diesel, known as UPM BioVerno, is an innovation which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent as compared to fossil fuels. The latest studies show in which UPM BioVerno diesel additionally reduces tailpipe emissions considerably. This high quality biofuel is actually produced from residue of the pulp industry, crude tall essential oil, with no edible materials used. UPM BioVerno is an ideal gasoline for all diesel-powered vehicles.

UPM started the production of wood dependent renewable diesel in the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery in Jan 2015. The production capacity from the biorefinery is 120 mil liters (nearly 32 thousand gallons) of renewable diesel-powered annually. UPM BioVerno continues to be granted a Finnish Crucial Flag Symbol. The Symbolic representation can be granted to items that are manufactured in Finland and also have a domestic origin level of more than 50 percent.
