Palestinian engineer develops affordable gas generator powered by waste

The actual village is at the end of the dirt road not far from Jericho on the West Bank. Wilderness surrounds it. There is no electrical power, it all comes from solar panels. And also the village’s gas comes from the recently installed anonymous white-colored box.

It produces biogas, and while the process is not brand new and is widely-used around the world currently, it has never been produced by an ultra-simple and inexpensive machine like this.

“This pail contains animal waste. Right now all I have to do is actually add water and mix this very thoroughly. Then the blend is poured into the device, and you just have to wait until much more its way to the bottom, ” says one contented consumer.

From this organic waste the device makes cooking gas, sufficient to power a range for two hours every day. Prior to the machine arrived villagers needed to cook with firewood.

“When we cooked before that made a lot of smoke. This smelt bad and it might be dangerous, because when it rained we had to make the fires inside. And it took a lot of time. We've got a flame when we need it, all you need is a little spark. ”

The machine was designed in Israel by a Palestinian engineer, Blessant Rabaya, who is busy setting up it in remote communities all over the West Bank.

“The main idea in fact would make a sort of stomach in to which the waste is shot, a stomach similar to our bait, with bacteria inside which eat the waste. This particular produces the gas which you can use in the home, ” he describes.

Making gas from waste materials is not revolutionary, but so far machines have been large and hard to build and supply. This machine is available in a small box in package form and can be assembled in your own home.

“We invented a way of getting Biogas technology into each and every home. Today we realize that waste products can be a source of energy, which changes the rules of the video game. If the profits to be produced from biogas are visible, as well as waste is no longer considered as this kind of, that changes everything, ” says HomeBioGas’ Sales Movie director Ron Yariv.
