Russia studying non-traditional fuel technology for GA operators

Based on the institute's calculations, in areas with a well-developed oil and gas economic climate - particularly in Russia's Far North - the utilization by regional aviation associated with condensed fuels would reduce spending on aviation fuel through 5%, and increase motor lifespans by 20-30%, along with cutting the cost of a trip hour by 20-40%. This kind of advance would also decrease pollution, it claims.
The actual institute's scientists are "developing the concept of a dual-fuel traveling engine demonstrator working on melted gas and also traditional energy, " it says.
Throughout November 2015, Baranov TsIAM specialists unveiled an aviators piston-engine demonstrator working on a good experimental type of condensed flying fuel.
The impetus with regard to using such fuels within Russia's regions needs additional market research, but "on the actual technical side, all the problems are resolved, " states TsIAM director Aleksandr Lanshin.
The concept is being studied inside co-operation with the Zhukovsky Main Aerohydrodynamic Institute, United Motor Corporation, representatives from the Ruskies Ministry of Industry as well as Trade and others, Baranov TsIAM says.
Russia has working experience of developing such technology, having flown a Tupolev Tu-155 with an NK-88 powerplant - developed by Samara-headquartered NK Engines - using melted natural gas as far back as 1969, the particular institute notes.
